Basic Safety Tips for Your Next Holiday
Summer is in full swing and Europe is getting ready for the summer vacation. With all the holiday excitement, travellers may not prioritise safety. Here are RiskPal’s top 10 travel safety tips to keep you safe wherever you go:
1. Come prepared
Check travel advisories provided by your government or other reputable sources. Be aware of any security risks, health concerns, or travel restrictions specific to that area. Know the local emergency numbers and the contact details of your embassy.
2. When in Rome, do as the Romans do
Familiarize yourself with the customs, traditions and laws of the destination you’re visiting. Try to not stand out in a crowd. Respect cultural norms and dress appropriately in public places.
3. Stay connected
Share your travel plans with trusted friends or family members and maintain regular communication, especially during solo trips. Keep them informed of your itinerary, including flight details, hotel reservations and local contact information, so they know where you’ll be during your trip.
4. Select wisely
Use reputable, licensed and well-reviewed local providers, whether it is your accommodation, transportation, or tour operators. When selecting hotels and providers always consider security measures, location, and reviews from previous guests. Transit is often when you are most vulnerable – so travel during daylight hours if possible. Don’t forget to pay it forward and leave a review.
5. Protect your belongings
Always keep your belongings secure, especially your travel documents such as passports, visas and bank cards. Scan copies of important documents and store them in the cloud so you can access them easily – just don’t forget your passwords. Use locks on your luggage and secure your hotel room: always take a door wedge!
6. Stay safe online
Make sure that all your devices are fully patched; and your devices and accounts are protected with strong and unique passwords, multi-factor authentication and appropriate privacy and security settings. Don’t connect to unsecure public Wi-Fi networks, especially when accessing or sharing sensitive information such as online banking or checking your corporate accounts. These networks may not be secure, making it easier for hackers to intercept your data. Whenever possible and legal, use a virtual private network (VPN) to encrypt your internet connection and protect your sensitive data.
7. Don’t let your guard down
Always pay attention to your surroundings and be prepared to act if necessary. Don’t get lost staring at your phone or studying a map.
8. Strength in numbers
You will generally be safer when travelling with others. If travelling alone is unavoidable, then try to stay in busy public environments. Places where children and women are present suggest that the area is safe.
9. Don’t take candy from a stranger
While it’s great to meet new people, exercise caution when interacting with strangers. Use your judgment and be mindful of sharing personal information including your travel plans or accepting invitations from unknown individuals. Always beware of scams when travelling.
10. Don’t be an easy target
Don’t wear expensive accessories or carry large sums of cash. Be careful when withdrawing cash from ATMs. The risk of mugging can be reduced by using ATMs in malls and shops during daytime. Listen to your instincts and remove yourself from a situation if it does not feel right.
